Best Actress Overview

Five legendary actresses have been called upon to receive the nomination for Best Actress at the 85th annual Academy Awards, which is scheduled to take place on February 24, 2013. The nominees for Best Actress award in 2013 are Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Naomi Watts, Emmanuelle Riva, and Quvenzhane Wallis. It’s a varied mix of qualified box office contenders and bright young newcomers which is sure to amuse and intrigue movie goers the world over. The skills and talents of these actresses have now been quantified and tested in the ultimate crucible – the eyes of the fickle movie going public – and found to be worthy. The Academy responds in kind.

Fan favorite Jessica Chastain would seem to be the fans’ shoe in for her riveting performance in the “ripped from the headlines” military action thriller “Zero Dark Thirty”. The film garnered instant acclaim and was a smash success at the box office, despite rumors circulating that the CIA had intentionally misled the films’ writers as to the exact details of the world famous manhunt and raid that finally netted and eliminated infamous Al-Quaeda terrorist Osama Bin Laden. Jessica Chastain essayed a nuanced, yet visceral, performance in the film that left movie goers spellbound and clamoring for more. Her nomination for Best Actress is well deserved and (some say) long overdue.

Other breakout performances netted Best Actress nominations for Naomi Watts, Jennifer Lawence, Emmanuelle Riva, and Quvenzhane Wallis. Jennifer Lawrence’s sultry performance in “Silver Linings Playbook” alongside such giants of the silver screen as Robert De Niro caught the eye of critics and movie goers alike. Meanwhile, Naomi Watts garnered mass acclaim and major box office receipts for her stunning star turn in “The Impossible”. Emmanuelle Riva and Quvenzhane Wallis may not be such instantly recognizable names, but the resultant Academy Award nods for both of them have served to ensure that both will remain as major players in the industry.
