Kathryn Bigelow

Kathryn Bigelow Kathryn Bigelow has secured a nod at the 85th annual Academy Awards for her direction of “Zero Dark Thirty”. In addition, Kathryn Bigelow also produced the film. “Zero Dark Thirty” has come in for some controversy, due to its extremely realistic depiction of the decade long manhunt which ensued after Osama Bin Laden masterminded the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center in New York City. “Zero Dark Thirty” relied on the cooperation of government agents, including many who worked for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), in order to ensure painstaking attention to nuance and detail. In addition to this, Kathryn Bigelow also served as producer of “Zero Dark Thirty”.

Bigelow has courted controversy before, but never to this current level. Box office receipts for “Zero Dark Thirty” were quite healthy to begin with, thanks to a long and very meticulously planned publicity campaign which truly pulled out all of the stops. However, the brouhaha over CIA involvement in the film soon whipped up a fire storm of true life controversy, one which nearly made the real life killing of Bin Laden seem like a back page sports trivia question in comparison. Throughout it all, Kathryn Bigelow rode high, confident in her ability to last out the storm and reap financial dividends from the controversy, which nearly resulted in a Congressional investigation in December.

Indeed, the controversy has proven to be nothing but beneficial to Bigelow’s career, as she surely calculated when taking on the project. “Zero Dark Thirty” has been nominated as Best Picture, Bigelow herself has won a nod as Best Director, and Jessica Chastain stands to take home the Best Actress award. The noble efforts of thousands of American soldiers, many of whom paid the ultimate price, ensured the dividend of millions of dollars for Bigelow and her project backers: a true Hollywood success story. For its contributions toward keeping alive this long time Hollywood tradition, “Zero Dark Thirty” may well take home the honors on Oscar awards night.
