“Silver Linings Playbook” may be regarded by some as the “dark horse” of this year’s crop of nominations for Best Picture at the 85th annual Academy Awards ceremony. There is always such an outside contender for the win. However, “Silver Linings Playbook” boasts a strong set of credentials with which it earns its nod for top honors. It has been both directed and written by veteran Hollywood industry power player David O. Russell, who worked from source material provided by the best selling novel of the same name, written by best selling author Matthew Quick. Based on the quality of source material and direction, the film has a legitimate chance to win.
“Silver Linings Playbook”, in addition to its power house writer and director, also boasts standout performances from a cast of certified Hollywood professionals, including such mainstay luminaries as Robert De Niro, Jennifer Lawrence, and Julia Stiles. Thanks to De Niro’s presence, the film was immediately guaranteed the go ahead from the powers that be. Indeed, Robert De Niro gave a standout performance which was recognized by movie goers, critics, and industry professionals alike, as one of the finest of his entire career. “The veteran actor really knocked it out of the park”, raved Hollywood Finance, and other critical reviewers were similarly apt and favorable.
While “Silver Linings Playbook” may not boast the “ripped from the headlines” historical accuracy and relevance of other leading contenders such as “Zero Dark Thirty”, “Argo”, and “Lincoln”, it still has an excellent chance of collecting the Academy Award. This is, in part, due to the silver screen industry’s love of casually shocking critics and movie goers alike with “surprise” nods to quirky or under performing vehicles which constitute the efforts of certain actors and directors which represent the small elite of the Hollywood “in crowd”. Based on this, and its undeniable star power and excellent critical reviews, “Silver Linings Playbook” is a top Academy Awards contender.
